Ignite at JPMorganChase: scaling community-led learning at enterprise level in the age of AI

When we think about AI and engineering at JPMorganChase, we’re not just chasing the next shiny tool. We’re building a culture where technologists can experiment, learn and scale real solutions. AI is moving fast, but the real unlock is how we engineer for adaptability. That means designing systems and communities that can absorb new tech, pivot quickly and keep people at the center of the process.

Our approach is pragmatic: we focus on practical applications, not hype. We’re seeing teams leverage AI to automate routine tasks, accelerate cloud migrations, modernization and upgrades, and drive smarter decision-making. But the magic happens when engineers share what works (and what doesn’t) in open forums so lessons learned ripple across the firm. That’s how we turn individual wins into enterprise-scale progress.

Launched in 2016, Ignite is JPMorganChase’s community-powered learning ecosystem, a global network of employee-led communities where engineers collaborate to solve real problems and drive innovation across the firm. It has transformed how expertise is discovered and applied, evolving beyond traditional, top-down training into a high-impact, peer-driven model that continues to shape how the firm builds capability and delivers at scale.

In the age of exponential AI advancements, at a time when skills are evolving more rapidly than ever before and knowledge is increasingly distributed, Ignite provides a scalable way for tens of thousands of employees across hundreds of in-person communities to learn from each other, solve problems and grow capabilities in real time while providing authentic, irreplaceable human collaboration.

The future of learning in technology isn’t just faster or more digital; rather, it’s more connected, and it’s helping to accelerate our AI journey.

A community-first approach

At the core of Ignite is a simple but powerful idea: the most valuable knowledge already exists within our organization. We simply need to provide a platform to share it. The challenge is not creating more content, but making knowledge easier to find, access and contribute to.

Rather than relying solely on formal programs, Ignite enables engineers to share expertise through grassroots, employee-led communities of practice (CoPs) that encourage cross-functional collaboration in a relaxed learning environment.

This community model shifts learning from consumption to participation, where knowledge is created and refined through active interaction, discussion and hands-on, practical learning.

Our communities in action

Ignite communities are self-organizing, but supported through a common framework defined by:

  • Visibility of communities, topics and expertise across the firm.
  • Reusable patterns for running sessions, workshops and discussions.
  • Active organizational support including active marketing, funding, equipment and sharing of success stories firmwide.
  • Integration with widely used platforms to meet employees where they already work.

This allows them to grow organically while still aligning to enterprise priorities. All the while, engineers grow their networks and access additional career growth opportunities as they work through real initiatives that support JPMorganChase’s strategy. For example:

Solution architecture community of practice (CoP) & cloud migration made easy

The Hyderabad Ignite Solution Architecture community scaled rapidly into one of the firm’s largest CoPs. The solutions and experiences shared in the community’s social learning environment led to real business outcomes with teams accelerating cloud migrations, improving delivery speed and increasing confidence in architectural decision-making. “This experience has not only enriched my own skills but has also inspired others, creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout our organization.” Sreenath Vanama, a software engineer for Chase and community member, shared.

Creating powerful automations to elevate human skills

An AI-driven automation solution born in JPMorganChase’s  Innovation Week Hackathon and further developed through the Glasgow Ignite AI community is now saving hundreds of hours per week by removing manual effort, while also driving a broader cultural shift toward automation, collaboration, continuous delivery, and scalable innovation across teams. “This journey demonstrated that when bold ideas are truly supported, transformative change is within reach,” Charles-Philippe Bernard, a software engineer in Corporate Technology, shared. “It also helped to land an exciting internal mobility move where I could focus my skills and passions every day.”

Key lessons for the future

Engineering is about more than code. It’s about architecting resilient systems, fostering trust and making sure every voice can contribute to the solution. AI is a tool, but community is the multiplier. When we combine technical excellence with authentic collaboration, we’re not just keeping pace – we’re creating new experiences for what’s possible in financial technology.

Technology is at the heart of everything we do at JPMorganChase, and our Ignite communities remain an integral part of the innovation engine, generating insights that are shaping how the firm thinks about learning at scale.

  • Learning is social
The most effective learning happens through interaction, not just content consumption. With rapid advancements in AI, we believe the protection of human-oriented learning spaces is vital – that’s what Ignite communities provide.
  • Discovery drives engagement
If people can easily find relevant communities and expertise, participation follows naturally.
  • Communities need nurturing, not control
Providing structure, tools and visibility is more effective than trying to centrally manage activity.
  • Value emerges over time and in unexpected ways
Community impact compounds, as connections, knowledge and trust build across the network. Value is typically experiential, story-based and inspirational – communities of practice are not places to ‘get free work done.’

As we continue to scale, Ignite plays a central role in how JPMorganChase develops skills, solves problems and drives innovation in an increasingly complex world.
