Following a bespoke week long induction, you will join your team and undertake a six-month placement in one of our lines of business. Your manager will set clear objectives and will support you in your learning journey as you grow your knowledge of the business. You will have opportunity to network across the organization and determine where your skills will be best applied.

You’ll also work to help us uphold our core values of integrity, determination, and leadership across the organization. We’re looking for those who can help us maintain our commitment to inclusion, innovation, and service.

Valued qualities

We are seeking our next group of leaders who are results-oriented, thrive under pressure, and adapt easily to new environments.

We value individuals who are capable, demonstrate integrity, and maintain a client-focused approach. Ideal candidates are motivated self-starters who learn rapidly and exhibit strong judgment and discipline.

Key skills

We’re looking for those with excellent problem-solving and communication skills, who collaborate and work well with a team. You should be comfortable talking to anyone in the organization and flexible enough to take on new assignments and learn new terminology.

The breadth of opportunities and amount of support make our post-military and athletes program unique. We take the time to get to know you, understand your skills, and where you’d like to go in your career before placing you in a role. We offer insight evenings to help you learn more about the firm, understand the opportunities available, and discover how you can make a meaningful contribution across our organization.

We hire veterans and athletes of all backgrounds, ranks, and experiences for roles across the firm, including project management, risk, compliance, finance, sales and trading, asset management, operations, technology and business management.

You’ll make an impact on our business from the beginning by helping us solve real business challenges and taking responsibility for projects from beginning to end. Applying the skills gained during your military or sporting career, you’ll help us innovate for our clients.

On-the-job experience

You’ll work on real-life projects that introduce you to the firm and prepare you for your next position. Besides gaining real experience working in one of our businesses, we offer many opportunities to build your network across the firm with speaker series, lunch and learn sessions, and other training opportunities. You’ll build your business skills alongside your global network as you search for a full-time position.

We’ll assign you a buddy who’s been through the program to help you navigate the firm and transition to our company, as well as a mentor to help guide your career and make the most of the opportunities available. You’ll work one-on-one with your manager and your mentor to create clear goals and you’ll follow up to make sure you’re achieving them.

This paid, non-rotational program begins in February and lasts for six months with the option to extend, if desired.

Training

We provide formal training opportunities and on-the-job skills development, to make sure you’re prepared to take on the next role at the firm. Participants have access to a wide range of online learning tools as well as in-person sessions led by senior leaders and industry experts to improve technical, financial, and other skills.

Program participants may receive an offer of permanent employment upon successful completion of the program.

How has the programme impacted you?

My experience with the programme was phenomenal. The induction week was a tour-de-force, providing a comprehensive overview of the company and its culture. My mentor offered sound and valuable guidance, helping me navigate the corporate landscape, while my assigned workspace buddy provided an outlet for all the little, yet important questions, accelerating my integration. But the most impactful experience was the day-to-day work. In this regard, I felt well-placed, as my role leveraged my skills while also providing ample growth opportunities.

What was the transition like for you?

Through the MVA programme, my transition felt well-paced and fully supported. While not entirely stress-free, it was much less stressful than I expected. The structured and comprehensive training offered by the programme provided me with the foundational knowledge I required and enabled me to quickly make meaningful contributions to my team.

I feel fortunate to have benefited from the MVA Programme. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a career change and wanting to join an organization with an excellent culture and an abundance of opportunities.

How did the organization help you to understand the value that you could add as a veteran/elite-athlete?

Initially, I was disappointed to find out that JPMorganChase didn't need an experienced health service manager. Who would have thought it! However, I quickly discovered that there is plenty of space in the organization for individuals who are team-oriented, results-driven, strong communicators and comfortable with change.

How has the programme impacted you?

This programme is incredible at providing a soft landing to service leavers. I joined the Army a decade ago intending to do a full military career, once the pressures of military life no longer fit with my personal life, I decided to leave but had little idea of what I wanted to do—I went for the JP Morgan scheme because it provided a safe space from which to grow. The programme allowed me to understand the financial services industry, learn about the way different areas of JP Morgan fit in with one another and decide where I could add value to the organisation.

What was the transition like for you?

On the one hand, I found the workload manageable as it allows me a work-life balance, alongside being able to rekindle relationships with old friends and family that have lain dormant. However, I definitely experienced identity loss. I always thought I was quite civilianised but didn’t realise how much I depended on the relationships within the Army to get me through stressful periods, nor how much of an effect spending your twenties in an organisation can have on you. I am grateful programme gave me stability for 6-months allowing me to find a role that I was able to thrive in.

How did the organization help you to understand the value that you could add as a veteran/elite-athlete?

The MVA team hosts sessions for those in the programme to spell out what skills are best to communicate whilst networking and during interviews. Military leavers that have gone before have made a huge impact on the organisation’s opinion of veterans— as a result there are very few areas which do not know what skills and value we bring. I personally found that there are areas that a veteran can easily add value whilst learning the specifics of the world of finance.

How has the programme impacted you?

The programme has given me the most incredible opportunity to pivot into the financial world. I have enjoyed the challenge of starting in a new industry, one which is fast paced with brilliant colleagues surrounding me.

What was the transition like for you?

Starting all over again after being one of the best rowers in the world is always daunting, but being humble enough to learn from others around me, to accept that this will be a journey and to fail fast are all important lessons that drove me in this new role. Sometimes it is learning the small things, like not eating the same huge diet I had as a rower, or getting used to not being in a rowing boat three times per day. But in other respects it is coming to terms with the fact that your identity has shifted.

How did the organization help you to understand the value that you could add as a veteran/elite-athlete?

Knowing that there are experts from the programme who are there for me to turn to, mentors for advice and encouragement from my immediate colleagues have all helped with the transition. I have learnt after a period of time here that the bank is a lot like an elite sports team! We work to goals, to deadlines, collaboratively and under pressure. The real fun comes in delivering and doing that as a team.

The programme is unique across the corporate world. JPMorganChase is incredibly forward thinking in creating this programme for elite athletes. We bring diversity of thought, of experience and life to the bank. I think this is so important for our culture and our performance.
