The Changing Face of Recovery

How 12 JPMorgan Chase Employees From 7 Countries Are Helping Change Detroit

What do a technical program manager from Sydney, a human resources professional from London and an operations manager from Bangalore have in common? On October 11th, they’ll join nine other top-performing JPMorgan Chase managers in Detroit to help the city continue its economic recovery.

This new group of 12 employees will work hand in hand with our partners on the ground in Detroit. For the third time in a year, JPMorgan Chase is leveraging the skills and expertise of our worldwide employees to help solve some of the most pressing economic problems facing the city.

As part of our $100 million commitment to the city’s economic recovery, the Corps employees will spend three weeks on the ground in Detroit working in teams alongside four Detroit nonprofit organizations that are helping grow small businesses, train Detroit’s workforce for in-demand jobs, and support Detroit’s neighborhoods.

The twelve new employees going to Detroit, plus the other 24 employees who have participated in the Detroit Service Corps over the past year, have more than 220 years of work experience at JPMorgan Chase, with an average tenure of nine years. The newest team comes from across our business and from India, Australia, Great Britain, and the United States. Previous JPMorgan Chase employees participating in the Service Corps have come to Detroit from countries such as Australia, Brazil, Chile, the Philippines, Singapore, the U.K. and the U.S.

This fall, the Detroit Service Corps will be working with:

  • EcoWorks to build a business plan for a retail and wholesale business for reclaimed materials and contribute to the local economy through job creation and skilled-jobs apprenticeship and training programs.
  • Greening of Detroit to develop a business plan for a new landscaping social enterprise and workforce development program to train Detroiters with extreme barriers to employment and help ensure the sustainability of Greening of Detroit.
  • TechTown to build a program proposal that will be used to guide TechTown’s work connecting brick and mortar businesses in Detroit’s neighborhoods with technical assistance.

We’re committed to deploying the Service Corps to Detroit over the full term of our commitment to Detroit, which will allow us to return to organizations over the next four years to assist with implementation, evaluation and follow-on projects.

The Detroit Service Corps also allows our employees to grow both personally and professionally. Employees have highlighted this experience as one of the best in their professional careers, enabling them to ask questions, adapt their styles to a new environment, build connections in other lines of business, and learn in a way they have not since they started their careers.

After three weeks, when they return home, these colleagues will bring back a fresh perspective and new problem solving skills to their regular work, with the understanding that they helped Detroit rewrite its history.

Tara Cardone joined JPMorgan Chase Co. in 1999 and works in Global Philanthropy as the Head of Employee Engagement & Volunteerism. Ms. Cardone is responsible for developing, expanding and implementing programs that engage employees in community service experiences both in the U.S. and globally as a way to deepen the firm’s commitment to the communities in which it operates and to help employees develop leadership and other skills.
