Our commitment to the art of learning

Chairman's letter - March 2005
JPMorgan Chase is proud to sponsor the national tour of Basquiat. We are pleased to be associated with the Brooklyn Museum, one of the country's most distinguished cultural institutions, which shares our commitment to supporting the works of both emerging and established artists.

JPMorgan Chase's longstanding support for arts and culture is recognized widely. It is a key factor in our commitment to the well-being and vitality of the communities we serve, and we seek to support the best in arts and culture offered in our markets around the world. Here in New York City, that means partnering with the Brooklyn Museum. Worldwide, JPMorgan Chase's support of arts and culture is reflected in any one of its multiple endeavors as collector, educator, corporate sponsor, or exhibition host.

JPMorgan Chase has built its own international art collection over the course of forty years. The collection began in 1959 with an emphasis on supporting emerging artists and contemporary works. Today, it includes more than twenty thousand works in JPMorgan Chase offices worldwide, encompassing paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, glass, ceramics, video, and indigenous arts, with representation from every region in the United States and every country in which we do business. It is continually shared with our communities. We are proud to have drawings by Jean-Michel Basquiat in our collection.

From the Brooklyn Museum, JPMorgan Chase's support of Basquiat will continue at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. We welcome our role in bringing the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat to more people, promoting cross-cultural dialogue and giving us all a broader understanding of the world in which we live.

National tour
JPMorgan Chase is proud to sponsor the national tour of Jean-Michel Basquiat. In 1982 during Basquiat's first gallery show, we purchased his work. He is now known internationally. Learn more about the artist, the dates and museums for the touring exhibit.

Our commitment to the art of learning
JPMorgan Chase is commited to supporting arts education and providing opportunities for youth to experience museums. In conjunction with the national tour, we are sponsoring a Web site called, Street to Studio: The Art of Jean-Michel Basquiat presented by JPMorgan Chase.

That site includes a biography on Basquiat, online chat rooms for teen-to-teen discussions about the art and in-depth explorations of six works by Basquiat. Through the experience of seeing and actively discussing the issues and ideas raised by artists like Basquiat, youth are encouraged to develop their critical thinking skills by learning how to talk and think about things differently, to accept different points of view, and to articulate their own views and ideas.
